Consortium for Infection and Immune-mediated Movement Disorders in India (CIIMDI)

Introduction

Infection-related movement disorders (INMDs) are a large group of movement disorders arising in the setting of and causally linked to an infection of the nervous system or a systemic infection
These may comprise up to 10-20% of secondary movement disorders in regions of the world where infections remain prevalent, such as India

The importance of recognizing INMDs is two-fold:

  • Potentially treatable disorders in most cases
  • Development of informational videos and leaflets on ataxia geared towards patients and caregivers
  • Infections continue to emerge (e.g. SARS-CoV-2) and re-emerge in many parts of the world
  • Another large group of treatable movement disorders is that of immune-mediated movement disorders (IMMDs), increasingly recognized, emerging recognition of newer antibodies
  • IMMDs includes movement disorders arising from both autoimmune (including demyelinating) and paraneoplastic disorders
  • While both INMDs and IMMDs are unique groups of disorders, their interrelationship may be bidirectional

Objectives

  1. To establish a national and international network of movement disorder neurologists interesting in INMDs and IMMDs
  2. To generate (national and international) large-scale data on the frequency, spectrum, and outcomes of INMDs and IMMDs
  3. To generate India-specific guidelines on diagnosis and treatment, considering the constraints of resources
  4. To increase awareness among physicians, neurologists, and movement disorder specialists about INMDs and IMMDs
  5. To advocate for persons affected by and living with INMDs and IMMDs and their care- partners
  6. To partner with other bodies working in INMDs and IMMDs, including infectious diseases bodies, movement disorder societies, autoimmune neurology groups etc

Aim

To establish a consortium of movement disorder neurologists interested and active in the field of INMDs and IMMDs for advocacy, teaching and research
